Paint calculator for iPhone — support

What Coats does

Coats answers the question that sends you back to the paint counter: how much paint do I buy? Give it the walls, tell it how many coats, what the surface is and how you're applying it, and it returns a shopping list in whole cans — gallons and quarts you can put in a cart, not a decimal nobody sells. It is an estimate built on published coverage rules, and it rounds toward having enough paint.

Quick start

  1. Add your walls. Tap Add Wall and enter width and height. Add a standard door or window with one tap — openings are not painted, so they come off the paintable area.
  2. Or scan the room. On iPhone models with a LiDAR sensor, Scan Room appears above the wall list. The scan lands in the same editable wall list, so you review and correct it before any quantity is worked out. If your iPhone has no LiDAR sensor, the button isn't there and manual entry gives you the same answer.
  3. Set the factors. Coats (a stepper), surface — previously painted, primed or bare new drywall, textured, bare wood, masonry — and method: roller, brush or sprayer. Then the waste slider, 10% by default.
  4. Read the answer. Cans first, in the size you buy them, with estimated cost and paintable area underneath. Share Estimate sends it as text to anyone.
  5. Save it, or quote it. Save Job keeps the room for later — the first saved job is free. Coats Pro keeps the whole library and exports the client-ready quote PDF.

Frequently asked

Why is my estimate different from the paint store's?
Because the two calculations start from different assumptions, and neither is measuring your wall. Paint labels in the US quote 350–400 sq ft per gallon; Coats defaults to the conservative end of that band, then applies a surface factor (bare drywall, texture and masonry all drink more than a previously painted wall), a method factor (a sprayer loses paint to overspray), and a waste margin of 10%, before rounding up to whole cans. If your can states its own spread rate, enter it — that is the number the manufacturer stands behind. A store estimate that skips any of those steps will land lower.
Which iPhones can scan a room?
Scanning needs the LiDAR sensor, which Apple puts in the Pro models — iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max and the Pro models since. Coats doesn't keep a device list; it asks iOS whether this iPhone supports room scanning and shows the Scan Room button only when the answer is yes. Coats is an iPhone app.
The scan merged two doors / missed a window. Is that broken?
No — that is a known limit of room scanning, and it's why the scan hands you an editable wall list instead of an answer. Correct the wall, add the missing window, delete what isn't real, then read the estimate. A scan is a starting point, not the last word.
What's free, and what's in Coats Pro?
The calculator is free: unlimited rooms, every surface and method factor, the whole-can shopping list, the scan, and one saved job. Coats Pro is an auto-renewing subscription that adds the full saved-jobs library and the client-ready quote PDF. It's offered monthly or annually, and the current price is shown in the app before you buy.
How do I manage or cancel the subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us: apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions, or on your iPhone in Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling there stops the renewal; you keep Pro until the end of the period you've paid for.
I paid, but Pro isn't showing.
Open Settings inside Coats and tap Restore Purchases, signed into the same Apple Account you bought with. If it still doesn't appear, email us and say which plan and roughly when.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, since Apple takes the payment. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something in Coats is the reason, tell us too — we want to know.
Feet or meters?
Settings → Units → Measurements. The whole app follows it, including the can sizes in the answer.
Where is my data, and how do I delete it?
On your iPhone. No account, no server, nothing to sign into. Delete a saved job from the Saved Jobs list; deleting the app removes everything Coats has stored. Full detail: privacy.
